Alessandra was born in Manhattan, and grew up in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Vermont, and Massachusetts. She studied acting in London while working towards a B.A. in Literature and Drama from Hampshire College, and holds an M.F.A. from teh Film Division of Columbia University. She has tutored students since 1995, and worked specifically on the verbal portion of standardized tests since 1999. She lives in Brooklyn, and spends a great deal of time taking photographs.
Alison earned her PhD from Columbia University and her MS from Yale University after graduating from Wesleyan University with high honors. Her PhD is in Earth and Environmental Science. She decided focus on environmental issues because she wanted to spend more time working in the beautiful outdoors. Alison is an instructor at Columbia University.
Bob has been taking, and excelling standardized tests for a long time. He's also taught and tutored SAT,SATII,GRE and GMAT for over 20 years.In addition to standardized test prep he has been a visiting professor in mathematics at the Cooper Union School of Engineering. There he taught courses ranging from vector calculus to general relativity. In addition to tutoring Bob has worked as a financial consultant at JPMorgan Chase and Fannie Mae. There he developed bond and options models in addition to providing general training for the staff. He also has developed a course in financial engineering which he teaches to financial professionals. Bob formal training is in mathematics. He studied number theory at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. His current field of interest is arithmetic algebraic geometry. Bob teaches math to our clients in New York and Washington D.C..
Fletcher graduated from Eugene Lang College at New School University in New York City with a B.A. in Nonfiction Writing. He founded and ran Lotus Writing Tutors for two years before moving to San Francisco, where he helped students in all aspects of writing. He has worked with all ages of students, from young to post college, and has expertise in teaching both ESL (English as a Second Languate) and test prep. He has also been published as a co-author of two fiction novels, the more recent titled Babylon's Tablet of Destiny, which he wrote with Jack Dunn. He is a contributing author of the first book about learning differences and the SAT standardized test, due out this Spring. Fletcher teaches a variety of couses for TPNY, and is our in-house learning expert for high school courses and the SAT. He lives in Brooklyn with his girlfriend and their pit-puppy, Leo. Fletcher works with students in the 5 boroughs of NYC, Long Island and Westchester.
Heather graduated March of 1993 from The School of Nursing at Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Florida. She passed the NCLEX exam in July 1993 on the first try. A "self-proclaimed" adrenaline junkie, Heather quickly advanced into Critical Care. She spent 10 years specializing in the Medical, Surgical and non-interventional Cardiology Intensive Care in Florida and as a contract nurse. In 2001 she moved to St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina and the day Shift. In exchange for Heather's experience the hospital trained her in Post Anesthesia Care. She served as the Critical Care educator conducting inservices on topics such as vasoactive and anti-arrythmic medications plus invasive lines and equipment. Heather found her niche at this small-town hospital and the recovery room became her passion. Three years later in New York City she obtained her CPAN credential on the first try. Currently she works at The Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York Presbyterian's recovery room.
In addition to clinical expertise, Heather possess an ability to score well on standardized tests. She understands the unique nature of NCLEX and nursing exam questions. As a traveler she was required to prove her knowledge at a new institution every three months. She passed each test on the first try. Instructors at Palm Beach Community College prepared their class to pass the NCLEX exam on their first try and her class achieved a 95% pass rate. Heather teaches NCLEX to private clients and in our classes.
Jason has a BA in English and American Studies from Goucher College and an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU. He teaches Essay and Creative Writing at various universities and organizations around New York City, writes grant proposals and designs outreach programs for assorted non-profit organizations, and has designed and taught College Preparatory courses at the Academic Camps at Gettysburg College. He’s a mean cook and grows the best heirloom tomatoes to come out of any Brooklyn backyard. He’ll talk your ear off about American popular music but has never seen American Idol. Jason teaches all our verbal courses and helped develop our MCAT verbal reasoning course.
Jessica has a BA in Sociology from Swarthmore College, and an MA from Yale University in Anthropology. She has taught writing, journalism and art history at various schools and universities in Manhattan. She writes about art and cultural trends for various publications. After spending three years abroad in Brazil, Israel and the UK, she now lives in San Francisco and works with Test Prep New York clients on the left coast. As an avid athlete, she has been known to take a sunrise bike ride on the East River and a sunset run on the Golden Gate bridge.
Karen C. has a BA in Neuroscience from Wellesley College and an MS in Teaching from Pace University. She has taught middle school science as a Teach for America corps member in Brooklyn for three years before deciding to get her EMT-B certification for New York State. Originally from Boston, MA, she has come to terms with the fact that no one here will root for the Pats or the Sox, although secretly, over the years, she has started feeling warmly towards those Giants. (shh, don't tell her brother). Karen teaches Living Environment Regents (100% of her students score over 80), ELA, SAT Math, ACT Math, SAT II math, and science tests for Test Prep New York.
Karen was identified as a brainiac when she began playing chess when other girls were playing with Barbie Dolls. She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics, from the University of San Diego and has taught as a linguistics professor for 9 years, at, among other places, the University of Michigan. She has published 1 book and numerous articles on English grammar (her area of specialization), both taught and wrote test materials for Stanley Kaplan and has tutored people on GMAT* for 6 years, including both American native speakers and non-native speakers from Japan, Korea, Venezuela and many others countries. A dedicated and resourceful teacher, Karen is one of TPNY's verbal experts and the developer of our Verbal Reasoning MCAT course. This course is excellent preparation for native English speakers and is absolutely indispensable for non-native speakers, who often find that the one-size-fits-all classes at other schools don't address their needs. She also teaches her revolutionary method of Accent Reduction to our non-native English speaking clients. She works with clients in person in Bosto and New York as well as through our distance learning program
Laura is currently working towards a dual Masters degree from Columbia School of Social Work and Bank Street College in the area of Early Childhood General and Special Education. She grew up near Winston-Salem, North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completing her BA in Psychology and Elementary Education. She has been working in various school settings as an early childhood educator always encouraging children to be life long learners, asking them to continue asking questions and fire their curiosity. Laura lives in Brooklyn and is proud to have run the New York City Marathon twice. She is looking forward to trying a triathalon in the near future. Laura teaches all our early education students.
Liz grew up in New Jersey and Maryland, graduating high school with an International Baccalaureate diploma. She then attended Brown University, where she concentrated in geophysics. After receiving her bachelor's degree, Liz spent a year in Americorps*VISTA doing literacy work with children and went on to work as a children's book reviewer for several years. Liz now divides her time between seismology research and graduate study in illustration. She can sometimes be spotted walking around town on her stilts. She is one of TPNY's science and math gurus.
Marc, originally from Belgium , got his PhD in Economics with a concentration in microeconomics, finance and applied statistics. He has passed, and teaches, the Series 7 and 63 investment licenses/actuarial exams 1, 2 and 3 as well as being our resident mathematical brainiac for probability and statistics, math (algebra, calculus, geometry, and Trigonometry), finance and economics. To boot, he can teach it all in French. He teaches clients in New York and Boston.
Mark worked as a college professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, and possess an extensive experience tutoring students for math on standardized tests with consistant outstanding results. He scored 800 on GRE quantitative for my PhD program, and was a winner of St Petersburg, Russia high school mathematical competition. He consistently scores perfectly on all math standardized tests. He works with students in New York and New Jersey.
Mickey attended preparatory school in India and America spending his summers traveling the world learning about cultures. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology upon being awarded their highest merit based scholarship and completed his BS in Management. Subsequently he founded several successful technology companies focused on bridging the digital divide. Mickey was a technical consultant to several Fortune 100 companies for a period of five years, during which he also received his MBA in Decision Sciences from Georgia State University, one of the top ten flexible MBA programs in the nation. Thereafter, Mickey decided to follow his dream of becoming a physician and matriculated in to Saba University School of Medicine. He has received numerous accolades during his medical training, including the Dean of Basic Sciences award for placing at the top of his class with a 4.0 GPA, and has scored a 99 on both USMLE Step I and Step II. He begins his pediatric residency in 2008 and plans on pursuing a career in pediatric cardiology. Mickey teaches the USMLE to our clients through our distance learning program.
Michael graduated from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, and studied Communication and Design principles under his advisor David Kelly, the pioneer of graphical interface for the computer mouse. He began teaching SAT, ACT, ISSE, SSHAT classes in Seoul, Korea and attracted international high profile clients in 2006 at a “world class” educational consulting company. He specializes in SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE and GMAT reading methods, rapid vocabuary acquisition, and has over 40 copyrighted texts regarding speed reading, active reading methods, and exotic skimming methods. His endeavor in his spare time is to bring the experience of teaching Physics and Chemistry at million-dollar a year prep academies in Seoul, Korea to students who have learning disabilities in New York. In 1996, he was a member of the U.S. Physics Team and scored the highest score in the United States on the preliminary round test.
Oliver has a BA in Classics from Bard College and is a member of
Harvard Law School's Class of 2012. Before joining TPNY, he worked as
a writing tutor in Bard's Academic Resources Center and volunteered as
an admissions counselor and SAT tutor for first-generation college
applicants with Bard's Academic Advancement Program. He is a
99th-percentile scorer who has also consulted and developed practice
materials for other test-preparation companies. He teaches our SAT and LSAT students how to think and perform like jedi test-takers.
Rabbi Neal: Jewish studies and Hebrew. Neal is a JTS graduate and former department Director of the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York. His tutoring is dynamic and can be interdisciplinary in approach. His personalized programs can be adapted for adults, children and teenagers of all backgrounds. His expertise is to provide learners with resources that encourage learning and self growth with the intention to help live an engaged Jewish life. Students study what they want and at their own pace. A in International Affairs from Columbia University after graduating cum laude from Columbia with a BA in African History. Samantha has traveled the world, is proficient in French and is an accomplished martial artist, human rights expert/activist and a documentary filmmaker. She makes history come alive, better than a Ken Burn's film. She teaches SAT and Regents like its nobody's business.
Ossa is a full time academic with a B.Sc. in communications and electronics engineering, an MBA in IT and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands. He has extensive teaching experience in the US and overseas. Besides teaching GMAT (and all our math courses) he also teaches business math and statistics for undergraduate and graduate students. Ossa also holds the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate from the Project Management Institute as well as the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certificate from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association. He also works as a project management consultant. He loves to read and travel (he's traveled to more than 15 countries in Europe and Asia). He's also interested in martial arts, especially karate and Kendo.
Scott grew up in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and graduated as valedictorian of his high school. He then attended Brown University where he concentrated in modern European history. During the school year, he served as a Big Brother, a mentor at an after-school program in the city, and in the summers, he worked as a housemaster and teacher at the Summer Institute for the Gifted, at Vassar College. After graduating from Brown in 2005, Scott began working as an SAT tutor and discovered that he could consistently improve students' scores by delivering effective test-taking strategies supplemented by confidence-building exercises. In addition to tutoring, Scott has interned at a WNYC radio station and is now getting ready for Medical School. He tutors clients in Boston.
Stephen received his Doctorate training in Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Texas Medical Center. He has made significant contributions in the biomedical scienes field with a consistent publication track record in numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Drug Metabolism and Disposition as well as in textbooks. He has coordinated and taught as a professor in various biomedical science courses in Organic Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In addition to helping students build a strong scientific foundation with individual sessions, Stephen also has extensive experience in scientific portions of standardized tests such as the MCAT, PCAT, and the GRE. He works with students in New York and New Jersey.
Thomas was born in Bermuda, but was raised in sunny South Florida. He attended Yale University where he was active as a swimmer, as a singer and as a volunteer working with students with disabilities. Thomas majored in History and International Studies, but also took coursework in advanced French and Spanish literatures, Theatre and Composition. He began tutoring and editing while on the West Coast and offers a slew of perfect scores coupled with a sense of humor and perspective. Thomas now resides on the Upper West Side, and falls in love with his neighborhood more and more every day.
William received his Ph.D in Aesthetics and Art History from the Sorbonne-St. Charles faculty in Paris. He has taught Art History, Archaeology and Aesthetics for 16 years at the university level in France and later in Puerto Rico. Besides teaching, has also worked in Educational programs at museums such as the Musee d'Orsay and the Guggenheim, NY. An Art Critic and curator, he has written several articles for French and Caribbean art magazines, promoting young artists and new exhibitions. In Puerto Rico, was a regular on cultural radio and television shows. He later worked for the Dept. of Education of Puerto Rico developing a new curriculum for the arts for elementary, middle, and high school programs. Today, he lives in Brooklyn, works for Barnes and Noble, Kentler International Drawing Space and the Guggenheim. He works for diverse community groups and non-profits concerning the arts, cultural activities and social activism. Can also be seen at the Greenmarket in Brooklyn promoting local and organic farming and products. William tutors many of our subjects: from regents tests, ERBs, standardized tests to academic tutoring in earth sciences, languages. Students delight in his enthusiasm and dedication to the learning process.
Zhao graduated from the University of Chicago with degrees in economics and physics. He has worked at consulting company in White Plains the past year. While in college, he TA-ed math and also did quite a bit of academic tutoring and test-preparation. In his spare time, I enjoy playing ultimate frisbee (although the frigid temperatures have shut that down until spring), reading, and film-making. Zhao teaches all our math courses, including standardized tests. He works in New York City (but we get him up to Westchester now and again.)
